Twelve months in a Japanese garden in Edinburgh

March – Ken’s post

A grey afternoon. The car park is being resurfaced, so I reverse and park in a nearby street. No-one else turns up, and after a few shots the camera packs up so I have to revert to the phone. Wind-swayed blossom against grey skies, a few bees buzz the early flowers, one magpie and two pheasants, the island still unobscured by leaves. The sound of a plane somewhere above the clouds. It’s neither particularly warm nor cold, and unlike last month the light is steady, unchanging. A small boy with a net is so excited he can hardly speak – “I’ve caught a tadpole!”
